The abacus is a mathematical tool that stimulates visual-spatial learning. Coordinated movements of the abacus encourages development of a number of sensory pathways in the brain, promoting creativity, reading, logical reasoning and observation, conceptualization for writing skills, and many other benefits associated with right and left brain development. An optimal learning environment is created as kinesthetic (touch), visual (observation, retention, and recall) and auditory learners are engaged in classroom instruction involving mental arithmetic and Brain Train exercises. As a result children have improved academic performance and see learning as an enjoyable activity. Active Brain Center has shown great success in the Greater Toronto Area, and it is one of the reasons why we have brought it into Quebec. Just within the first few months of commencing, we have seen a surge in the level of interest. Our enrolments have gone up, and we can definitely see bright future for Montreal. Active Brain Center is not only shaping the kids of our own community but those of others as well and thus, creating young masterminds. Our mission is to nurture the intelligence and creativity of a child by teaching exemplary computational skills using the abacus. Use of the abacus encourages whole brain development as both the left and right hemispheres of the brain are utilized, thereby stimulating the intelligence of the child through improved speed and accuracy in calculations, concentration, visual memory, logical reasoning and creativity. In this technologically dynamic society, our aim is to give children the tools and skills necessary to achieve success in school-based curriculum and in any field that they pursue. Vijayalakshmi Balasubramanian, is a graduate in mathematics from Madras University. She has over 15 years of teaching experience for children in the age group of 6 – 11 years. She is a masters in abacus – mental arithmetic and has trained over 150 teachers in India and Canada. Her expertise lies in content development, teacher training and student evaluation. She has developed the course curriculum for ABC based on a study of the Canadian method of education in Arithmetic. Her passion lies in nurturing children to attain whole brain development through abacus mode of arithmetic training. She is based in Chennai and travels to Canada frequently for training and evaluation purposes.
