Timing & Turnaround
Please note that our wash system is in an unheated building. We wash only during the time the weather is not freezing. This is usually between April & October. Keep this in mind as we cannot process unwashed fibre during the winter months. Ensure that we receive your fibre in good time to wash before shutdown in the fall or you will have to wait 'til the next spring. We try to keep turn around to approximately 8 weeks during April – October. How Clean Does My Fibre Need to Be? Your fibre should be well skirted to remove as much contamination as possible ie: burrs, mats, dung tags, hay etc. You are charged for washing on the raw weight so if your lot contains these things you will be charged for the weight as well as spreading their contamination throughout your batch. Llamas & alpacas should be blown out prior to shearing. This opens the fleece allowing the wash to do a better job as well as removing much of the small contaminants. We reserve the right to refuse processing to fibre we judge too contaminated. Sorting All fibre to be run together as a single lot should be prepared & bagged together. If you sorted your animal at shearing time into various grades, decide what will be going into the batch & place together in a single bag. Your sorting job can greatly influence your final product. Personally we don't mind offering some of our experience, but it is best if you arrive with the initial sorting already done and some of this thought through. What Yarn Do You Want? There is quite a variance in the yards per pound (thickness) of some of the various names of yarn weights. For instance, if you only specify fingering weight yarn, you might get yarn that is 1900 yards per pound or you might have yarn that is 2400 yards per pound. It is better to decide in yards per pound the weight of yarn you want done so that we're all on the same wave length.
