At Jolly Tutoring, Dr. Susan Whittaker specializes in pre-school through 6th grade reading, writing and math tutoring. Susan also works with foreign language children and adults in securing English reading and writing skills.
Susan has been working in the Illinois Public School system for 16 years. As an early childhood specialist for 7 years, she worked with children with disabilities ranging from mild speech and language delays to severe handicapping conditions. For the remaining 8 years, she taught kindergarten in classes that included a strong emphasis on English language learners as well as inclusive children with special needs. Susan possesses a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English from Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario; a Masters in Teaching (MAT) from National Louis University, Chicago; a Masters in Education Leadership, Aurora University, Aurora, Illinois; and, a Doctor of Education (EdD) from Aurora University, Aurora, Illinois. Her dissertation entitled “Response to Intervention (RtI) - Effectiveness in Kindergarten Reading Achievement” was completed in May, 2013. Susan also possesses TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification from the University of Toronto. Susan is passionate about early reading skills at the pre-school through fourth grade level and has been an independent trainer for Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar (www.JollyLearning.co.uk/) for the past two years. Susan networks with worldwide trainers and attends annual global conferences to discuss reading incentives and pedagogies. The use of Jolly Phonics, in her own classroom, yielded increased reading scores as evidenced in standardized reading tests. Susan is committed to reducing reading delays by implementing research-based reading programs at an early stage and providing children with the necessary skills to be successful readers. Susan currently conducts research with several pilot schools on behalf of Jolly Phonics. Susan currently provides education consulting and works with school districts and area pre-schools in implementing the Jolly Phonics program.
